It’s terrifying and heartbreaking the number of

It’s terrifying and heartbreaking the number of dogs we’ve read about accidentally slipping away from their new owners soon after adoption. Sometimes even on the car ride home, or within the first 24 hours! Adopting a new dog can be very exciting for you, but you need to keep in mind that there is likely a great deal of stress involved for the dog. There’s a huge amount of change happening for a new puppy entering its new home, and even more so if you’re adopting an adult dog, especially one who has recently been transported a fair distance.

Although there’s loads of advice we would love to give, we wanted to narrow down this post specific to the safety aspect of your leash and collar combo.

Here are some helpful tips for the first day (and next few days, or more):

- Select ONLY a well fit Martingale style collar. This will prevent your dog from being able to slip out of its collar if it panics. Later on when you’ve built more trust/training with your dog you can get whatever collar you want, but for now safety first.

- A basic 4 to 6 foot leash is all you need for now.

- Keep a leash and collar on your dog in the car on the way home and be extremely cautious opening doors.

- Keep a leash and collar on your dog at all times there’s ANY possibility of your new dog getting away from you accidentally. Do not be lazy and assume your dog is able to be off leash in any situation.

- As soon as possible purchase an ID tag with your contact information and put on the collar. (We hope if you utilize the above steps this won’t be necessary but best to be extra prepared)

Puppy Preschool – Group Class This dog training

Puppy Preschool – Group Class

This dog training class is geared towards young puppies only as their unique needs are very different from an adult. This introductory level introduces several basic foundation commands such as sit, down, stay, come, leave it, watch me so that you can build the foundation of communication with your puppy and have him on the right path to good behaviour all around.

We also discuss important topics like potty training, crate training, general health, nutrition, grooming, nipping, chewing and jumping because we know these are common topics that new puppy owners have lots of questions about.

Most importantly we cover critical human and dog socialization skills which is your #1 defence against your puppy becoming a fearful or aggressive adult dog.

REQUIREMENTS: Must be aged 3-5 months old at time of start date and be current on puppy vaccines (small breeds may be slightly older pending Trainers approval)

$175 for 5 weekly sessions – May 19, 26 and June 9, 23, 30 at 5:20pm

K9’s with Manners - Group Class

This dog training class is geared towards any dog 6 months of age and older. This level is the perfect follow up after Puppy Preschool, but is also very suitable to Adult dogs who have received minimal training so far. We will focus on advancing a variety of basic commands which will aid in daily manners and behaviour, including come when called, and leash manners. We also work on enhancing your relationship with your dog through increasing patience, focus and engagement for better listening and compliance.

*This class is NOT suitable for dogs showing any signs of aggression*

Although our veterinarians are highly educated, getting a quick and proper diagnosis can be largely reliant on the information you’re able to provide. Since our dogs can’t speak and offer information on what’s wrong, it’s up to you to be their voice. If something is off with your dog, photos and videos can provide much-needed insight for your vet. Does your dog have an occasional strange limp? Make a weird coughing noise? Are they having episodes that look like they could be small seizures? Keep your phone close by and film concerning behaviours as often as possible. I also like to keep a written log of unusual events including dates and times and any details I may think could be relevant to the situation (what was your dog doing before the behaviour started? Was anything different about their day? Where was the location? Who was around?). Taking your dog to the vet can be stressful so we hope this tip helps make the experience go smoother.

Leash manners is probably one of the most common things we are asked to help with. With the reality that life in the city means staying on sidewalks so cars aren’t a danger, walking inside stores or through crowded urban environments, we feel that teaching your dog to walk on a loose leash, but right next to you, is a very useful and practical skill for most city dogs to have. That being said we want you to keep in mind that this is very unnatural for dogs as a species. Leashes are a man-made concept created to help control dogs we chose to domesticate and keep as companions. Spend lots of time teaching leash manners and be patient in understanding this concept is foreign to your dog and likely not its preference. Can they learn it? Absolutely and fairly easily with the right practice, but it is asking a lot of them. We also recommend pairing your city walks with off leash time in a safe environment and/or time spent on a long line where they can safely wander and explore.

Dogs don’t primarily communicate through verbal communication like us so it’s no wonder that heavily relying on verbal commands has left your dog with less than ideal listening skills. For the next 24 hours we challenge you to say absolutely nothing to your dog. Pretend he is completely deaf! Just use body language (and maybe some treats) and a leash as needed to guide your dog. You might be surprised what you discover, and how this actually helps improve your communication and relationship!

Cleaning: Are you missing spots?

We all have our own cleaning routines; daily, weekly, monthly, year, but are you missing some spots when it comes to your dog? Here’s some places we recommend you clean often.

The water bowl: This one commonly gets missed resulting in nasty bacteria build up that your pup is now drinking. Be sure to run your dogs water bowl through the dishwasher along with his food bowl to keep him at optimal health.

Your dog: Yep make sure your dog is being bathed regularly. If your dog really smells like dog, it could be from inconsistent hygiene, or an issue like a yeast infection which you’ll need to research and address possibly with the help of your Vet.

Bedding: This one might seem obvious, but make sure all doggy blankets, crate pads and beds are washed (or replaced if needed) There’s no point in keeping your dog and house clean if the dog bed is going to be stinky and gross, housing who knows what microscopic critters. (ok I’m getting itchy just thinking about it now!) Bonus tip: shake everything out really well, vacuum, lint roller, etc as appropriate before the washing machine. You’re welcome.

Toys: That's right toys! Bet you didn't see that one coming. I mean come on. You’ve seen what happens with those toys. Sanitizing is a no brainer now right? Toss those stuffies through the laundry along with that dog bed and clean the hard toys with the dog bowls. See how easy this all is?
The kennel: If your pup sleeps or spends any time in a crate, make sure to sanitize that as well form time to time. Build up is bound to occur in every nook and cranny, your dogs crate is no exception.

Collars and Leashes: When was the last time you washed your dogs collar and leash? Once again common sense dictates we cover all our bases, clean dog, clean collar… and the leash, well you touch that one so I’m sure you’ll appreciate it being clean too. Soak in the sink or add to your laundry as needed.

And lastly, Clothing: Yes, I know, but lets face it if you have a little short haired dog, you likely have a sweater or two. Be sure to toss those in the laundry after a couple of uses.

A training class is not the place for your dog to

A training class is not the place for your dog to learn, a training class is a place for you to learn.
Go to a good class and ask the trainer questions so that you are clear on what you need to do. Listen to the trainer fully. The snippets of information they give are important. Practice in class so your trainer can see you have a good understanding on how to help your dog's learning. Then go out and practice these skills every day in the real world. Your dog learns best in the home, garden, car and street, beaches and fields, they learn in real life, not just in a classroom.

Thinking of getting a puppy or dog? Here are some expenses you should consider.

🐾The purchase price or adoption fee
🐾Initial vet check ups, possibly including vaccines, dewormer, and flea treatment as appropriate
🐾A healthy long term vet budget both for routine care, including dental, as well as surprise illnesses, injuries and emergencies
🐾Spay/neuter, if appropriate
🐾Dog food and training treats
🐾Basic supplies such as bowls, leash, collar, ID tags, dog bed, toys, kennel, chew items - these items will likely need to be replaced on occasion as well throughout your dogs lifetime
🐾Dog training (several months minimum, but up to a year of lessons if needed)
🐾Grooming, even if your dog does not require haircuts, regular bathing and nail trims will still be required as well as brushing
🐾Overnight boarding if you travel, dog walker or dog daycare, if applicable
